I can’t help myself…nor can I sleep

So instead of waiting patiently for the QAL to start, I decided to do a top while I wait, As I was surfing the web tonight I came across this quick tutorial, and I just so happened to have a charm stack that I wanted to use, but wasn’t sure what to use it on, here are all the pieces out, I think where I want them….I will try and sleep on it, and see if I still like the layout in the morning.

Its just a small baby quilt, one that will probably sit in my closet for a while since all the people I know are having boys!

I know I should be finishing the Boy quilt I have on the go, but I didn’t feel like rethreading my sewing machine with the right colored thread 🙂 I am sure you all know what I am talking about, continue on with what you have, start new projects and leave all the other projects to the last minute…:)

I am also writing this at 2:30 in the morning, why you ask?  I am wondering the same thing!  Thinking about to many things I guess.  Hopefully now that all the pieces for this quilt are ironed and set out I can get some sleep, I tried to sleep but got out of bed to iron open my seams because I didn’t want to leave them.  Then of course I needed to lay out the quilt pieces, and then blog about it to hopefully someone!

Fabric for Quilt-a-Long

I stopped in at Fabricland, this time at the east location.  They were still having their sale, buy 1 meter get 3 meters free, so I finished off collecting the fabric for the quilt along.  I think doing the quilt for our bedroom would be a good start.  I picked out the reds/tans pack, even though I got dome more fabric from some of the other collections that I have started, I wanted to make this one for me.  I am excited to start and can’t wait for next week, when we begin!

The nice thing about this fabric is its from the Marcus collection, its beautiful fabric and it all matches very nicely.

Some of the other things that I would like to do with this fabric include a quilted iPad bag/case, and maybe even one for my macbook.  With all of this fabric because of the sale I have 1 meter of each.  The Quilt sampler calls for 1/2 meter of each so there will be plenty left over.

I think I will also create a feature piece for the back of the quilt, maybe a coin strip or something to that effect.

The other option would be to make the quilt top large enough and then not back it but instead make it into a top of a duvet cover, our king size duvet needs a new cover, so this may end up a duvet instead of a quilt, I am not sure yet.  If that is the case, I may use the flat sheet that came with my bedding for the backing, instead of buying more fabric just repurpose some of the sheet that we don’t use.

Now that my room is pretty much done…

I am about to start a Quilt A Long with Amy…

I hope to keep up with 2 blocks a week and get some other quilting done too.  This should be fun!

I think I have the fabric that I wish to use picked out, But I may have to go and do some more shopping!  She will be posting the new quilt blocks next week, so I have a few days to decide.  Maybe this one should be my red quilt?  of maybe I should use my greens and peaches….Oh I don’t know!

I am working also on some shirts for my grandma, she has limited mobility now and its hard for her to put on shirts over her head, so my Mom and I went to Value Village and found some nice shirts, I have cut the back of them to make room for a panel, which buttons to the rest of the shirt, this way she can wear nice things without having to hurt herself by putting them on!

I also need to finish the baby quilt for my friends.  I was hoping to work on it some more this week, but I don’t think I will get to it until Sunday.  My Mom leaves on Saturday, and so these shirts need to be done before then so that she can take them to my grandma once she gets home.

A Serger Edge “Rag Quilt”

I made this quilt quite a while ago, but thought that I hadn’t shared it anywhere.  The top, is quilted rag style with all edges serged rather then sewn and cut, the reason for this is because I didn’t want my nephew to suck on the blanket and then choke on any threads that my come out.  I also only used the 2 layers of Flannel instead of quilt batting in between the layers, it is very warm even without it, and a good weight too.

Here is the back of the quilt, the top is Lions and yellow, and the back is monkeys with greens and yellows.   I serged the edges as well to finish off the quilt instead of binding it.

An image of the top a little closer so you can see the serged edges…

And one showcasing both the top and the back…

Some Quilted Retail Therapy :)

Had kind of a crappy morning, so while I was out running some errands I stopped in at fabricland, and I think they heard that I was coming and needed some wonderful and cheap quilting fabric to make me feel better!

They had most of their quilting fabric section on for buy one meter, get 3 meters free!!

The photo above is some of the wonderful fabric that I picked up and here are some more photos of what came home with me today…

This bundle, I think will become some girl baby items, the middle fabric has some cute little chicks on it

This bundle, doesn’t have a purpose yet, but perhaps some spindle bags or some pillow shams

I think this bundle will become some quilted bags, or This and That Boxes, I especially like the bottom fabric and I may break that one from this pack and find some coordinating fabrics that have more greys and greens in them

And this Bundle, which is my favorite is either going to become a quilt for my bed, or some smaller projects such as a laptop cozy and iPod case, and iPad case.

My Feet will arrive Thursday!

I think, to anyone who is not a quilter/seamstress/sewing machine fanatic would really wonder about that statement!!

But My Mom is coming on Thursday from Calgary, and she is bringing my walking foot, and my quilting foot!!  Which means that I can finally finish the baby quilt that I have been working on, I Hope to finish it before the weekend is over, this way I can bring it and the sweater in for Paul and Marilio’s Daughter and new baby.  Which isn’t born yet (I think)!

I have been busy sewing this week though not working on quilting, but working on Spindle bags.  I am selling them at my LYS, and they are a big hit that is for sure, with less then half left of the 9 bags that I made for last Saturday.  I also made some pattern keepers that sold out on Saturday!  So I have to make more of those!

Luckily while my Mom is in town I will get lots of time (I hope) to quilt and sew more things.

Yummy Fabric!

So, I think I found a new second favorite hang out, I only say second favorite because my LYS is my first favorite…lol…But my new second favorite is Peachtree Fabric and Quilting shop!

It carries Moda!  And I didnt even know it!  Here I am drooling over everyone elses Moda fabrics, when I could be buying my own!!

Needless today my wallet cried a bit because of me stopping there today…lol

I also bought some Amy Butler 5” squares as well.  And a super cute pattern for a bag.

Cleaning, and more cleaning

My Mom is arriving for a visit in less then 2 weeks, and I need to get stuff gone through and sorted!  I have been busy unpacking and throwing things out, more sorting of my craft room as I catch up on tv shows, and more things sorted in the rest of the house.

We now have our tv and video game centre mostly sorted, we have to hook up a couple of more speakers, but other then that.  Today I went to superstore and wal-mart to pick up some organizational things, one a set of plastic drawers for my craft room, for underneath the table in the photo above, and some plastic bins for tupperware storage as we don’t have enough cupboards to house them all.  So into totes and into the storage room they go!

I am also working on so wooden ikea drawers, i think i need to glue them together though before nail them together, so these are slow going, and they may get pushed aside for a little while.

I have to find my labeller, I am lost without it!  I could however just bring home the one from the restaurant for a couple of days and use it. which is what I may end up doing.

I have some more things to hang up, my magnetic boards for inspiration ideas and some towel rac type things for hanging quilts or other things from.

I will get this all done, its just a matter of time, but the sooner the better i suppose, so off to work on it all some more!

Not working on the Baby Quilting…

Would be my answer today if you asked what I worked on today…lol…

I did however finish an new eye mask for bed time, and my spindle case cover/handle.

The spindle holder is a tube that I got from a kit for a bag, and I knew it needed handles for carrying, so I went to work on a cover for it with handles.

I think it turned out great!!

Birth of a Craft Room

So As promised, today was full of moving stuff to storage and the start of sorting out my craft room!  I am excited to have 2 functioning sewing desks, one at table height and one at hip height for standing or sitting on my taller stool.

Seen in the photo above is the taller table, which will house my laptop when its in this room and either my sewing machine or serger depending on if  wish to sew standing up.  I will take more photos as i straighten more space out in my room.

I also have a cutting/ironing table set up its just full of clutter at the moment as I go through boxes.

You can also see the panels of my baby quilt hanging there waiting to be sewed together, I would like to get a chance to work on that today, but I think that cleaning and organizing is more important today.

I am off tomorrow, and other then going to sit and knit with friends at 7pm I am doing laundry and more cleaning/organizing this room.

Some Light Reading

I had about an hour tonight at home, before I was to pick Chris up.  I decided that I would read some articles online, but found myself falling asleep!  So Off to Chapters I went to keep myself awake.  There I browsed the magazine and craft book sections and came home with some great books and magazines.

The Magazine that I picked up is Homestyle Sewing.  I picked this one because it had a pattern for an eyemask.  which i desperately need a new one, and yes I know I could just use my old one as a template, but sometimes its neat to see if someone else does something special when they put theirs together.   I have some ideas of what I would like, so watch for some of those soon.

I also picked up a One-Yard Wonders book, full of ideas of what to do with one yard, I have looked through it and know that there are a few things that will come out of that book too, like a laptop cover for my macbook.

Tomorrow, I plan on working more on the baby quilt and getting started on cleaning and organizing my craft room.  I am going to send some stuff to storage with Chris tomorrow as well, so that we have more room here to manoeuvre.  I think 3 weeks is long enough to live in a state of boxed not so bliss as I would call it!

Small amount of Progress

I guess because I am tired, I didn’t feel much like quilting today, although all of my seams are pressed open and I have 2 of the sashes between the coins sewn on, 4 more to go, and then the end sashes and then the front is complete.

I am going to put a belly band on the back of the quilt, meaning a band on the mid section that is different from the backing fabric, I think its very cute to do this.  I have to still cut my back sections and sew together the band, but that shouldn’t take very long.

I have to find some floor space for the next step of my quilt, we are still surrounded by boxes from our move, and while I really want to go through them, I am procrastinating every step of the way.

But Sunday we should be able to take some more stuff to storage like the Christmas Tree and some of the garage stuff that we still want to keep if we ever get a house.  Which means more room to manoeuvre.  I am then going to remove elver last box that was put in my craft room and set up tables for my sewing area and set up my shelves and proper sewing desks.

I am thinking that I may put them at different heights, the one under the window I think will be sitting height, and the one that will be on the wall beside that one will be standing height, if the legs expand that is, i will have to check on that, I was thinking this would be good as I like to sew standing up sometimes, good for the legs etc.

I hope to post photos soon of my craft room once I get it all sorted and usable again.  Right now it looks like a pile of boxes., but perhaps I will take some before photos to make the after photos more dramatic…lol.

I love Shopping…lol

I was at Fabricland today picking up the white and dark blue that I need to finish my coin quilt and I came across this uber cute fabric, its the second from the bottom one in the photo above, its pinks, and greens and teals, just lovely.  It also happened to be on the sale rack, so I picked up what was left of the bolt, as well as some coordinating colors, I am not sure if I am done picking colors, but I wanted to start collecting them.  Also at this point I am not sure what will become of it, bibs, or blankets or something I am sure.

On that note, I found out today that one of our reps of our suppliers is pregnant, with a boy, so I will ether quilt or knit something for him, but I have till August to get that done, as she will be going on mat leave at the end of august, and coming to visit all of our stores with the new hire sometime in august.

Progress before work…

I woke up this morning, to some banging, appearantly 8:00am is a good time to hang pictures in our building…lol…anyways, I decided that I would work some more on the Stacking Coins Quilt that I started last night.

Progress, before I head off to work…

3, yes that is right, 3! stacks of coins completed…lol

I have 2 more to go, and then I need to stop at Fabricland today and pick up some white fabric for the dividing strips, I think white will work best, so not as to take away from the pattern in the quilt.  I am also going to take one strip with me, and see if I can find something to do the binding with, I am thinking the dark blue that is already in the quilt to make it pop.

But for now, I am off to work!

Have a great day!

Coins, Coins and more Coins!

All of my coins for the baby quilt are cut! Hmmm looking at the quilt can you tell what my friend is having? I really hope that they like the quilt once it is done!

I am now going to figure out if my 1/4” seams are accurate.  To do this, Amy has a great blog full of tutorials, you can find the tutorial here.

I am using some “test” coins to figure this out.

I also found this great article on Leaders and Enders, a way to cut down on your ends and get more quilting done in the process!!

I have been spending some time looking at some awesome quilts, so I hope to inspire myself to do more…and maybe even incorporate some knitting into it!  We will see!

I think that instead of starting yet another post about this quilt since I want to show off the first set of coins, that I will just add it to this post.

This is one set of the coins together, mind you there will be plenty more attached to this one, but atleast it is started, now I can go to bed!

Things to remember on this quilt, if you have fabric that has a direction, be sure to check the fabric before you add it to your coins, so that it is facing the right way!  you don’t want to get through all of your pieces and find out that one, in the middle of course is upside down!!

So for tonight, I ironed all of my fabric for this quilt, I cut the fabric into 2.5” strips and then cut those strips into 5” lengths, making them coins.  Then I tested my 1/4” seaming so that I get it right, and then I started to sew the coins together.  Yeah for me!  Progress, considering that this fabric has sat for the last 2 weeks while we moved, and while i aimlessly searched for my iron, which I didn’t find, but I did go out and buy me a new one, a small portable one, so that even if I find my iron, I can put this one in my travel bag or pack it for a quilting class etc!

Adventures in Quilting

I am not done Knitting, I just love to do all sorts of things, so from time to time I quilt.  I would like to share my quilting here, with you.  I hope that you will enjoy it.  Maybe learn a thing or two, or maybe someone can teach me something too!!

Today I am starting on a stacked coins quilt for my friends little one on the way, you can find the pattern on Moda.

I will show more as I get it done!
